Part of a landmark mixed-use development in Hangzhou, the Grand Canal Museum was conceived not just as a cultural destination, but as a driver of new economies locally. Barker Langham helped shape the project’s narrative, interpreting China’s Grand Canal as the protagonist in its own story – the greatest feat of hydraulic engineering in human history. We also conducted a full review of the museum’s concept design, ensuring that the architecture by Herzog & de Meuron supported the interpretive vision, the visitor journey and the commercial ambitions of the wider site.
