When Interpretation becomes Artefact

What does it reveal about exhibition histories when certain objects and media transition from being interpretations to becoming artefacts in their own right? At Barker Langham, we are committed to creating exhibitions that resonate long-term—experiences that, in some cases, evolve into artefacts with lasting significance. These exhibits often have a "life" beyond the exhibition itself, continuing to shape narratives and perspectives even after they’ve closed. This concept was explored by Barker Langham founder Eric Langham and Colin Sterling, Fellow at UCL Institute of Archaeology, in a paper examining the transition of interpretation into artefact. Their reflection contributes to ongoing discussions about the evolving role of museums and exhibitions in our cultural landscape, and the enduring impact they can have on both public memory and the objects they display.
