Barker Langham is about to embark on an exciting research partnership with the University of Leicester to explore one important question: what if we could reimagine how exhibitions are made?
The challenge
Industry-standard models of exhibition and experience development are tied up with architectural process, resulting in linear, restrictive and resource-intensive practices.
At the same time, institutions are seeking to develop more cost-effective, environmentally sustainable and socially responsive exhibitions, while audiences expect ever-more exceptional experiences.
A new approach to exhibition-making has the potential to meet these demands.
The solution?
In short, we don’t know yet – but we’ve got plenty of ideas.
Over the next two years, we’ll bring together BL’s experience of exhibition development with the knowledge and technological expertise of the University of Leicester to define new models of exhibition development.
This approach will centre creativity, inclusivity, interdisciplinarity and sustainability, and embed digital thinking and collaborative ways of working.
This in turn will redefine exhibitions: as imaginative, regenerative experiences that are both socially and environmentally responsible, and with impacts far beyond their physical life.
The partnership
This KTP marks the latest stage in our valued partnership with the Institute for Digital Culture and the School of Heritage & Culture at the University of Leicester. We will work with Professor Ross Parry, Dr Georgiana Grigore and a KTP Associate to accomplish our goal.
Over the years, our collaboration with Leicetser has included internship programmes, teaching, a doctoral position and the £1m AHRC-funded Sensational Museum project. We’re excited to build our partnership through this unique new project.
